ATTENTION! THIS IS A 25MB DOWNLOAD!

Sorry, if that is too much for your connection.

The video quality isn't ideal either, but it's a 100 seconds animation. I had to make compromises and blah blah blah.:crying:

-----------------------------

THANK YOU GUYS FOR ALL THE NICE COMMENTS!! I DIDN'T EXPECT SO MANY SO FAST! YOU'RE TOO KIND!

Sooo, this is my biggest model to date.
I started it 2 years ago, tinkered with it here and then and actually decided to finish it a few weeks ago.
As you might recognise, this is the tree house library from mlp:fim and it's surroundings.
As always, the style is more realistic than a cartoon, but still not too realistic.

Some facts:
The duration of this animation is 104 seconds.
I's made out of exactly 2500 frames.
The rendertime for one frame was between 10 and 15 minutes.

The background is prerendered, which means the mountains were only rendered once.

The whole project was intended to be rendered in full HD, but that would have doubled the rendertime.
This doesn't mean, you will never see it in full HD.;)

For the library tree I recreated the leafs of an actual golden oak tree, also known as quercus alnifolia.

Except for the library and a few small objects, none of the models are really finished. They are more like dummies.
I say this, because I often get asked for models to get released for download.
In most cases that would be a lot more work, so I can't do it.

If you have read all that, thank you, and why the heck did you read all that?!

Inspired by mlp:fim
Done with Blender, Gimp, Inkscape, Flash CS

Thanks for watching!

The word: epic is in it's place here.
Do I see balloons in the air?

How do you get the controls under your animation? When I upload an animation it is also .swf but obviously without the controls.
I think it is some sort of add-on.

Thanks!
Yes, these are air balloons.

About the controls:
The buttons and ruler are from the flash library and the logic behind them are done in actionscript.

This is utterly beautiful. Truly a work of art. While I am a bit glad Ponyville doesn't quite look like this as this looks more like a bunch of huts set across a field instead of an actual town, it really does give the field of a humble village set in a fantasy epic or even a fantasy adventure game like Skyrim. Really looks like a place you'd want to explore.

I just found out about Sketchfab, it would be great if this could work with it ^^ It lets you explore through your 3D models with controls and everything. Like this. But I guess it would be too good to be true and as you said this can't be rendered in real time...

You really should consider releasing, at least the library, as a download. this looks simply awesome. probably the best version of the library we have.

The Golden Oaks Library has come to life again! I love this! It's like you're actually there!
Now I want this to be a game so that I can go inside and explore it! A nice little version to enter would be great, would help to kill the time a little before the next OSW of Legends of Equestria!

I downloaded the version of which you say it has controls, but I'm not able to move it around when using the arrow keys.
Are there other keys for that or have you uploaded the wrong version?

The SWF should be ok.
What player do you use? If it's Chrome, it may not work, because it uses it's own Flash plugin.

Just my untrained, inexperienced input, but do you think this would benefit from a slightly stronger sun emission to brighten up the scene?  It seems a bit overcast.

Heck what am I doing, this scene is gorgeous and EXTREMELY detailed. Beautiful work!

Every constructive input is welcome. You're not even the first one, who noticed that.
And I have to agree!
The light situation like this is one of many compromises, I had to make.
Firstly there were aesthetic problems for me with the combination of the slightly cartoony look and the very realistic light.
But the biggest problem was time: More light means more light calculations, which means even longer rendertimes.

I agree on the balance between cartoon and realistic, and especially you who seems to have it so well mastered in your other models.  Maybe it could just be brightened as a whole post render, maybe with a video editor? (IDK, just ideas)

In the end it all comes down to: "How long am I willing to put up with rendering?"

I light of that, I got permission from my CAD professor to render farm the labs on the weekends :D

Already edited it in post production, but if the light is low, the possibilities are limited.

Well, rendering can be a burden. I will change something on my setup soon.
Maybe there's even time to rerender some old projects then. will see.

I hope I haven't been overly critical, just being an extreme perfectionist.  It's quite insane in quality and the lighting isn't devastating to the image by any means (we've all seen plenty of renders that were ruined by low light.)  Sorry if I over picked it.

What lighting setup did you use? I'm rather new to the lighting side of things, modeling's been my focus for a long time, so I'll take all the advice I can get.

Hey, if this renderfarming is successful, I'll have ~10-20 computers available to farm with on late Friday nights.  Maybe you could send it to me (if this ever works) if you decide to re-render it someday.   How long did it take to render entirely? My numbers say 17 days, which that does not seem correct.

Edit: And now that I look back at it again....it's no where NEAR as dark as I remember  oh well.

Don't apologise! You made constructive criticism.
It's okay to point something out, if you really care about the piece of art.
And it's even a thing, that annoys me as much.

The lights here aren't any special. I tried to simulate a sun, so I used only one strong light in the sky.
The rest was some fine tuning with a small ambient occlusion factor for a higher contrast.

The rendertime was more like an month. There were downtimes etc., so it's difficult to calculate it correctly.

Well, thanks for offering me your caculating time!
I once tried this with one additional machine and run into a lot of problems.
So, I really would have to look for a practicable way to do this.
But for now, I really appreciate your offer :)

Cool.  I really need to just practice lighting for like a week.

dang....We'll be test running the farm tomorrow evening.  We had it working for 3, now we're going for ~20 then finally I think a total of 30.  And if we can convince the graphics dept. to set up a Blender Render farm at the university....well then... :D  (My friend knows how it works much better than I do and figured out how to run it in the background, so we should be able to use all computers in lab that aren't occupied for a short session.)

Why does the rendering take so long?  Since there aren't physics involved, it seems like it should be able to be real-time on a high-end gaming computer at least.

:iconchritsel:
Chritsel Featured By Owner Sep 30, 2015  Hobbyist Digital Artist
To be exact, there is a lot of physics involved. While rendering, the trajectory of every single light particle is calculated and that takes its time.
In games/real-time applications the most parts of light for landscapes are prerendered or much simpler than this.
And another important part is, that in games they use techniques to make things run fluently.
For example keeping the models as simple as possible while the textures are in high quality.
And then you would need a modern engine to handle this kind of graphics.

In my model on the other hand I used more complex models and lower quality textures.
And the cycles engine is beautiful, but not very fast.:D
